Resumen

The present work offers empirical evidence on the impact of the composition of imports on Colombia's gross domestic product during the period between 1994:T1 and 2016:T4. To comply with the above, it was necessary to review the economic theory and an exploration of previous research. In addition, the historical analysis of the series used was carried out. Subsequently, it was possible to determine both the impact and causality of imports of capital goods, intermediate goods and raw materials, and of consumer goods in economic growth through using tools such as the autoregressive vector models (VAR). The results revealed that the composition of imports had a positive impact on GDP during the first period, maintaining variable effects in the short and long term, however, only imports of capital goods had a statistically significant and positive impact in the short term.
