Introduction. Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) represent the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with a greater burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) (1,2). Systematic reviews conducted to date show that interventions involving nursing professionals and incorporating a person-centered care (PCC) approach may be effective for self-management and disease control in patients with NCDs. However, most studies with this approach have been conducted in high-income countries (3–6), and therefore their effectiveness in low- and middle-income contexts—where health system conditions and social determinants may vary—is unclear. Objective. The objective of this scoping review is to identify person-centered nursing care interventions reported in the literature for the control of NCDs and their impact on patients in low- and middle-income countries. Methodology. A scoping review will be conducted following the methodology of Levac, Colquhoun, and O'Brien (2010) (7), which includes five steps: 1) identifying the research question; 2) identifying relevant studies; 3) selecting studies; 4) charting the data; and 5) collating, summarizing, and reporting the results. The literature search will be conducted in Medline, Scopus, Virtual Health Library, and the reference lists of potentially eligible studies. Included studies will be systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (SR-RCTs) and individual RCTs, in English and Spanish, with no publication date limits. Studies must meet the following criteria: 1) Population: patients with NCDs from LMICs; 2) Intervention: PCC-based interventions involving nursing professionals; 3) Comparator: usual care or non-PCC interventions; and 4) Outcome: disease control. Study identification, selection, data charting, and result summarization will be performed independently by two reviewers, with discrepancies resolved by a third reviewer. Finally, included studies will be qualitatively summarized, describing the study design, country, type of NCD, intervention and comparator characteristics, outcomes, and effect measures. Ethics and dissemination. Ethical approval is not required for this scoping review. Findings will be disseminated at scientific events and through peer-reviewed journals.
