Abstract

Renal colic is one of the most frequent pathologies in the emergency department,
with an incidence of 16 per 10,000 people; with an overall prevalence of 2 to 5%.
The characterization of the population improves protocols of care and directs the
efforts in the profiles of patients with a higher risk of complication. This research
supports the efficacy in the care and management of this pathology in the different
types of patients studied. Methodology: observational, descriptive study, with a
cross-sectional analytical component; Including patients over 18 years of age, with
a clinical picture of urolithiasis, who were treated in the emergency department of
the FOSCAL clinic, in Bucaramanga, between the period between January 2019 and
December 2021. Objective: Identify the clinical and sociodemographic variables of
patients diagnosed with Urolithiasis associated with hospital and surgical
management. Results: The total number of patients included in the database was
934, 244 patients were excluded of the analysis. The median age was 42 years
between 18 to 84 years, 73% correspond to men. 6.39% with a history of surgery for
lithiasis and <5% of patients with a history of CKD and in the same percentage
metabolic disease. 2.03% did not present pain, while 68.7% of the patients did not
5
present vomiting. The diagnosis of urinary infection was made in 9% of the patients.
69% were stones <5mm, most (>70%) were located in the distal ureter and 33% of
the patients presented grade 2 hydronephrosis. Hospitalized patients in 18.4% and
14.4% requiring surgical treatment. The variable in which an association to surgical
and hospital management was found was the diagnosis of UTI.
