Abstract
In this article a theoretical review let to describe and analyze the model implemented by the government of Hugo Chavez Frias in Venezuela called Socialism of the 21st Century. Specifically, it analyzes its effects on the trade balance from the year 2000 to the year 2013. For this, a descriptive analysis is applied, which allows to do an interpretative critique of the situation. It was found that the economic development of the country shows a decline during this period and it is possible to identify some failures of the socialist model such as dependence on oil income, exchange rate control, high levels of inflation and a reduced support in the internal production of the country.
