The Semillero de Investigación en Ortopedia y Traumatología (SIOT) de la Fundación Oftalmológica de Santander (FOSCAL) was established on August 16, 2023 by Dr. Guillermo Varón Plata, orthopedic surgeon and hand surgeon, medical researcher José Fernando Santamaría Boada, and Sylvia Villamizar, masters in epidemiology.
Structurally, it is organized into two main lines of investigation: the upper limb and the lower limb. The upper limb research line addresses symptomatic shoulder, study of peripheral nerves, as well as analysis of trauma and fractures. On the other hand, the lower limb research line focuses on diabetic foot, joint replacements, and the study of trauma and fractures in this anatomical region.

Objectives:

  • Identify and analyze research needs in the field of orthopedics and traumatology.
  • Encourage active participation of students, physicians, engineers, and other interested personnel in research activities.
  • Develop research skills such as protocol creation, literature search, methodology, among others.

Activities:

  • Bibliographic review: Search and analysis of relevant scientific articles in orthopedics.
  • Participation in research projects: Collaboration with researchers in ongoing projects or design and execution of own projects.
  • Seminars and conferences: Organization and attendance at academic events related to orthopedics.
  • Presentations and publications: Preparation and presentation of research findings at conferences and drafting scientific articles for publication.
